  5. INTRODUCTION
  6. ------------
  7. WorldTime 2.1 is a powerful international clock utility for
  8. the Microsoft Windows operating environment.
  9.  
  10. WorldTime can display six different international locations
  11. and their current local times -- selected from a database of
  12. over 170 metropolitan and geographic locations worldwide.
  13.  
  14. WorldTime is flexible, too!  With just a few keystrokes,
  15. custom location names can be substituted for any of the
  16. standard locations.  This feature allows you to
  17. custom-configure the WorldTime location/time displays any way
  18. you see fit.

  20.  
  21. PROGRAM FILES
  22. -------------
  23. The WorldTime 2.1 package consists of five files:
  24.  
  25. README.TXT
  26. An introductory ASCII text file, containing program notes and
  27. "quick and dirty" installation guidelines.
  28.  
  29. NETWORK.TXT
  30. A technical supplement dealing with the use of WorldTime 2.1
  31. in a network environment.
  32.  
  33. WTIME21.EXE
  34. The executable program file.
  35.  
  36. WTIME21.HLP
  37. The Windows Help file, used for providing comprehensive
  38. run-time help via the Windows Help system.  The help system is
  39. accessed via the menu bar "Help/Contents" selection.  Any help
  40. topic may be easily printed through the Windows Help menu bar
  41. "File/Print Topic" selection.  A printable registration form
  42. is included.

  44. WTIME21.TXT
  45. This file, containing program information, notes, general
  46. instructions, and a registration form (see end of file).
  47.  
  48. A sixth file, WTIME21.INI, is created the first time
  49. WorldTime 2.1 is run.  This initialization file is normally
  50. located in the user's default Windows directory, and is used
  51. for storing all configuration information.  Every time
  52. WorldTime is run, the program checks the Windows directory
  53. for this file and will create a new, blank WTIME21.INI file
  54. if the original is not found.
  55.  
  56. NOTE:  For the benefit of user's who prefer keeping the
  57. WorldTime .INI file in the WorldTime default directory, the
  58. program can be run with the "Private Mode" command
  59. line switch (/P).  This forces the program to create and
  60. access its initialization file in the WorldTime default
  61. directory (i.e., wherever the WTIME21.EXE file is located),
  62. and also allows multiple copies of WorldTime (stored in
  63. separate directories) to be run with their own configuration
  64. settings.

  67. PROGRAM NOTES
  68. -------------
  69. WorldTime 2.1 runs within the Microsoft Windows environment,
  70. and requires the following:
  71.  
  72. * Microsoft Windows (version 3.1 or later).
  73.  
  74. * VGA or higher graphics capability (640x480 minimum
  75. resolution).
  76.  
  77. A Windows-compatible mouse or other pointing device is
  78. recommended, but is not required for running WorldTime.
  79.  
  80.  
  81. SYSTEM CLOCK SETTINGS
  82. ---------------------
  83. WorldTime is dependent upon the accuracy of your computer's
  84. system clock, and your operating system's associated DATE and
  85. TIME settings.  Both must be correct for WorldTime to
  86. function properly.
  87.  
  88. WorldTime 2.1 includes the facility to adjust your system
  89. TIME setting from within the program.
  90.  
  91. This is done by selecting the menu bar "Options/Set System
  92. Time..." command.  This will open a dialog box containing
  93. "repeating" pushbutton controls for adjusting the Hour and
  94. Minute TIME settings.
  95.  
  96. To accept any changes, "click" the "OK" button or press the
  97. "ENTER" key.  To discard any changes, select the "CANCEL"
  98. button.
  99.  
  100. There are a number of other methods available for adjusting
  101. your system DATE and TIME settings, both from Windows itself
  102. or from the host operating system.
  103.  
  104. Consult your Windows User's Manual or your operating system
  105. user's manual for full explanations of the DATE and TIME
  106. functions.

  108.  
  109. INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
  110. -----------------------
  111. 1. MAKE A BACKUP COPY
  112. We strongly recommend making a backup copy of your program
  113. disk.  Keep the master copy in a safe place and use the backup
  114. disk for program installation.
  115.  
  116. 2. COPY THE PROGRAM FILES
  117. Although WorldTime can be run from a floppy disk, we strongly
  118. recommend its installation to a hard disk.
  119.  
  120. To do this, copy the primary program files (WTIME21.EXE and
  121. WTIME21.HLP) from your master disk to an appropriate
  122. subdirectory on your hard disk (e.g., C:\WTIME21).
  123.  
  124. The ASCII text files, WTIME21.TXT and README.TXT, are an
  125. important source of program information, but are not REQUIRED
  126. in order to run WorldTime.  The WorldTime initialization file,
  127. WTIME21.INI, is created when WorldTime is first run and
  128. usually stored in the default Windows directory (usually
  129. C:\WINDOWS or C:\WIN31).  The two program files (WTIME21.EXE
  130. and WTIME21.HLP), however, ARE required, and must reside
  131. together in the same drive and directory in order for the
  132. program to work properly.

  134. 3. ASSIGN AN ICON
  135. You may use the "Windows Setup" utility to assign WorldTime's
  136. program item (icon) to a program group.  Setup will recognize
  137. the WTIME21.EXE file and assign its icon to a program group
  138. for you.

  142. You may assign a program item icon to WorldTime 2.1 manually,
  143. through the Program Manager menu bar "File/New" command.
  144.  
  145. Always make sure that the complete path and correct filename
  146. (e.g., "C:\TIME\WTIME21.EXE") is assigned to the WTIME21
  147. program item.  The "Browse" control in the Program Item dialog
  148. box will make it easy to locate and assign the correct path
  149. and filename.

  151. 4. RUN THE PROGRAM
  152. If installed correctly, the program should load from the
  153. Program Manager screen when the WorldTime icon is
  154. double-clicked (or from File Manager when the WorldTime
  155. listing is selected with "File/Run" or double-clicked).
  156.  
  157. Naturally, you do not have to assign WorldTime executable file
  158. to a Program Manager group.  The program can easily be run
  159. directly from File Manager or any "substitute" Windows shell
  160. or desktop application.

  162. 5. WORLDTIME OPERATING MODES
  163. When WorldTime is run without any command line parameters, the
  164. program defaults to "Normal Mode."
  165.  
  166. Normal Mode is the recommended operating mode for most users,
  167. and offers the most reliable performance whether the program
  168. is being run on an individual PC or in a network environment.
  169.  
  170. In Normal Mode, the WorldTime 2.1 initialization file
  171. (WTIME21.INI) is automatically stored in the host PC's default
  172. Microsoft Windows directory (e.g., C:\WINDOWS).
  173.  
  174. Normal Mode is specifically recommended when WorldTime is used
  175. on local area networks, since operation in this mode makes
  176. locating and accessing the WTIME21.INI file very easy.
  177.  
  178. Normal Mode limits ALL instances of WorldTime on the user's
  179. system to a single initialization file.  As a result, users
  180. will NOT be able to install and run multiple copies of
  181. WorldTime and run each with different configuration settings.
  182.  
  183. A second operating mode, "Private Mode," is available
  184. for the benefit of users who prefer to access the WTIME21.INI
  185. file from WorldTime's own directory (e.g., wherever the
  186. WTIME21.EXE file is located), not the default Windows
  187. directory.
  188.  
  189. To run WorldTime in Private Mode, the /P command line switch
  190. should be included in the WorldTime command line, as in the
  191. following example:

  193. C:\WTIME\WTIME21.EXE /P
  194.  
  195. When run in Private Mode, multiple copies of WorldTime
  196. (located in separate directories) can be run concurrently,
  197. each one accessing its own set of configuration settings
  198. stored in a separate WTIME21.INI file.
  199.  
  200. Copies of WorldTime installed and used in a local area
  201. network (LAN) environment generally should NOT be run in
  202. Private Mode, since this can complicate management of the
  203. individual WTIME21.INI files (See Network Considerations
  204. below).

  206. The user can always check the operating mode of a currently
  207. running instance of WorldTime by opening the "About WorldTime"
  208. dialog box.

  211. NETWORK CONSIDERATIONS
  212. ----------------------
  213. WorldTime 2.1 was designed from the outset to extremely
  214. compact, requiring the absolute minimum in terms of disk space
  215. and memory resources.  As a result, there is relatively
  216. little to be gained from installing WorldTime on a network,
  217. as opposed to simply distributing registered copies of the
  218. program to individual users.
